“Designing Worlds in Science and Fiction”@ “Dawn or Doom” 2017. 9 AM on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Fowler Hall, Stewart Center.

Since Station Eleven’s plot hinges on a limited edition graphic novel, we’re hosting a Comics Workshop @ West Lafayette Public Library.  Runs Wed. – Fri., October 11-13 from 5:30-6:45 PM. Refreshments provided.  Pre-registration is recommened but not required; click here.

 Bonus: WLPL’s Fall Book Sale starts on Friday Oct 13. Browse books after the workshop!

"Future Thinking”: an interdisciplinary forum @ Purdue Honors College. Refreshments, desserts, and snacks!  All Purdue Undergraduates invited.


 “Museum of Civilization” exhibit @ West Lafayette Public Library. Reception on Nov. 15 at 6:00 pm. Refreshments provided. Exhibit will run Nov. 15 – Dec 7.

Wednesday, January 24, 7:00 pm, Honors Hall, Honors College.  Viewing of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," from visionary director Julie Taymor.  (Sponsored by the Department of English Big Read, the Honors College, and the Purdue Libraries)

Thursday, January 25, 6:00 pm, Hiler Theater, WALC 1055.  "Stone Soup" (a regional Shakespeare touring group) presents a sneak peak of Season 8 including a rehearsal and staged reading from Taming of the Shrew.  Open to all.  Audience interaction and feedback encouraged!  (Sponsored by the Department of English Big Read and Stone Soup Touring Group)


Join the English Department & the Purdue Student Union Board every Thursday in February from 4-5 PM in PMU for our annual "Books and Coffee" series. This year’s theme will be speculative fiction/dystopian/post-apocalyptic books:

Feb 15:    Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven

Feb 22:    Elizabeth Kolbert’s The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History

"Viewfinder," Ringel Gallery, March 26-May 5, 2018.  Artist Luke O’Sullivan creates architecturally inspired sculptures and prints depicting imagined places beneath cities and landscapes. Exploration and adventure are central to the work, with each piece contributing to an ongoing catalogue of a strange invented world. Early interests in Nintendo games, maps, and science fiction contribute to the playful nature of his art.


In keeping with our post-apocalyptic theme, Purdue Convocations presents The World Without Us, a theatrical meditation on a post-human earth. April 13 & 14 @ 8PM. Loeb Theater. Tickets are $22-30.

Finally, Emily St. John Mandel will be our distinguished guest speaker at our annual Literary Awards on Thurs. April 19!

 5:30-7:30 PM – Literary Awards Banquet with advice to young writers by Ms. Mandel; tickets are $30.

 8:00-9:30 PM – Reading, Q & A, and book signing by Ms. Mandel. Fowler Hall. Free and open to the public.
