Common assignment pilots

During Fall 2018, ICaP is entering the second generation of common assignment pilots for all ICaP courses. All ICaP instructors are required to integrate one of these assignments into their syllabi. At the end of the semester, we will collect all assignment materials and a sample of student work from every instructor.

This common assignment supports our ongoing assessment efforts and responds to suggestions made in Spring 2017 by our external evaluators, the Council of Writing Program Administrators.

Assignments and instructor guides

  1. Professional Email Assignment
    • Originally developed by Alisha Karabinus and Bianca Batti
    • Professional Email Instructor Guide
      • Assignment overview: Students write two email messages to different audiences
      • Timing: First two weeks of semester
      • Grading: Common rubric for ICaP, flexible rubric format for students
  2.  Rhetorical Analysis
    • Originally developed by Alex Long, Daniel Ernst, and Carrie Grant
    • Rhetorical Analysis Instructor Guide
      • Assignment overview: Students write a ~3 page paper analyzing the rhetorical choices of a text
      • Timing: Assignment given twice during semester—once with no instruction at beginning of the course, once with a full course unit
      • Grading: Common rubric for ICaP, flexible rubric format for students
  3. Research-based Essay
    • Originally developed by Derek Sherman and Amanda Leary
    • Literature Review Instructor Guide
      • Assignment Overview: Students summarize, analyze, and synthesize at least five academic, peer-reviewed sources on a topic
      • Timing: Four week unit anytime during semester
      • Grading: Common rubric, adjustable point values
  4. Writing Portfolio
    • Originally developed by Mitchell Jacobs and Phuong Tran
    • Portfolio Assessment – Instructor Guide
      • Assignment Overview: Students compile a portfolio of their work in the course and reflect on their growth and revision processes
      • Timing: End of semester (using documents collected throughout semester)
      • Grading: Optional rubric
  5. Information Literacy Essay
    • Originally developed by Daniel Ernst and Carrie Grant
    • Information Literacy Essay Instructor Guide
      • Assignment Overview: Students write two in-class information literacy essays
      • Timing: Beginning and end of semester
      • Grading: Common assignment prompt, no required rubric, minor inclusion in grade
