Instructor Awards

The Writing Program at Purdue is proud to announce the launch of a combined ICaP and PW series of awards for pedagogy and professionalization. This year there will be three awards, with a total of four winners from among faculty, staff, and teaching assistants. Additionally, the current ICaP Quintilian Award based on end-of-the-semester student evaluations will be open for PW instructors to apply for. We invite any eligible individuals to apply. The awards, prerequisites, criteria, and application process are listed below. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Writing Program Award for Exceptional Instruction

The Writing Program Teaching Award is designed to celebrate successful instructors of ENGL 106, ENGL 106D, ENGL 106L, ENGL 108, business writing, technical writing, multimedia writing, writing in the health and human sciences, or other courses in the writing program at Purdue. Two winners will be chosen—one teaching assistant (graduate student) and one faculty/staff (including lecturers, visiting clinical instructors, etc.). You may nominate others or yourself. We encourage self-nomination.

Prerequisites: 

  • Must have taught at least one course section within the Introductory Composition at Purdue or Professional Writing program within the past academic year. 
  • Must be either currently employed as faculty/staff by Purdue University, or currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Purdue University. 

Criteria: 

  • Letter of nomination (no more than 2 pages) 
  • Demonstration of teaching excellence. Please provide at least 3 of the following: 
    • Course evaluations 
    • Teaching observation letter 
    • Video recording of one class session
    • Course assignment, rubric, and sample student submission (with student permission)
    • Any other materials that may not fit in these categories but still demonstrate teaching effectiveness
  • Please include a link to an online folder or website (Google Drive, Box, personal website, etc.) that contains all multimedia materials (videos, audio, etc.)

Process

  • All letters and materials must be submitted to Bradley Dilger (dilger@purdue.edu) by April 5, 2024 at 11:59pm
  • Judges will deliberate and winners will be announced in May 2024.

Award amount: $250

Writing Program Award for Innovative Pedagogy

The Writing Program Innovative Pedagogy Award is designed to celebrate innovation in teaching. If you or an instructor you know has a course, a sequence of assignments, a classroom activity, research, or any other innovative contribution to the teaching of Professional Writing or Introductory Composition at Purdue University, we want to hear from you. One winner will be chosen. You may nominate others or yourself. We encourage self-nomination. 

 Prerequisites: 

  • Must have taught at least one course section within the ICaP or Professional Writing program within the past academic year. 
  • Must be either currently employed as faculty/staff by Purdue University, or currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Purdue University. 

 Criteria: 

  • Letter of nomination (no more than 2 pages)
  • Demonstration of innovative pedagogy. Please provide at least 3 of the following:
    • Course assignment, rubric, and sample student submission (with student permission)
    • Classroom activity 
    • Video recording of one class session.
    • Comments or feedback from student evaluations
    • Publication about your unique teaching approach or innovation 
  • Please include a link to an online folder or website (Google Drive, Box, personal website, etc.) that contains all multimedia materials (videos, audio, etc.) 

Process:

  • All letters and materials must be submitted to Bradley Dilger (dilger@purdue.edu) by April 5, 2024 at 11:59pm 
  • Judges will deliberate and winners will be announced in May 2024. 

Award amount: $250

Writing Program Award for Outstanding Professionalization

The Writing program Professionalization Award is designed to celebrate outstanding professionalization on the part of instructors and graduate students. If you or an instructor or you know has done excellent work in professionalization over the last year, we want to hear from you. One winner will be chosen. You may nominate others or yourself. We encourage self-nomination. 

Prerequisites: 

  • Must have taught at least one section within the ICaP or Professional Writing program within the past academic year. 
  • Must be either currently employed as faculty/staff by Purdue University, or currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student. 

Criteria:  

  • Letter of nomination (no more than 2 pages) 
  • Demonstration of professionalization. Please provide at least three of the following: 
    • Attendance at a minimum of 2 writing program workshops during the academic year
    • Presentation or judge at the pedagogy showcase
    • Publication or presentation (or acceptance of publication or presentation) within the past 12 months
    • Evidence of professional work that may not fall into the above categories but demonstrates professional development (serving on committees, editing journals, etc.) 
  • Please include a link to an online folder or website (Google Drive, Box, personal website, etc.) that contains all multimedia materials (videos, audio, etc.) 

Process:

  • All letters and materials must be submitted to Bradley Dilger (dilger@purdue.edu) by April 5, 2024 at 11:59pm 
  • Judges will deliberate and winners will be announced in May 2024. 

Award amount: $250

Writing Program Quintillian Awards

The Quintilian Awards are designed to recognize great teaching in the ICaP and Professional Writing programs. If you had a solid semester and would like to be recognized, please apply for an award. Quiltillian Awards are awarded each semester.

Prerequisites: 

  • Must have taught at least one section within the ICaP or Professional Writing program within the past academic year. 
  • Must be either currently employed as faculty/staff by Purdue University, or currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student. 

Criteria: 

  • The evaluation response rate for the Spring 2024 course for which you are applying must be at or above 50%
  • Award recipients will be all applicants whose overall score in the eight required items (below) is at or above 4.6. 

Process:

  • On your course evaluation report, highlight your mean scores for the eight required items. (See below.) This mean score appears in a bar graph in a box labeled Means.
  • On each course evaluation report, average the 8 mean scores you have highlighted. The resulting number is your overall score.
  • See the cut-off listed above to determine if you will receive a Quintilian Award.  If in doubt, turn it in anyway, and let us do the calculation.

Submission: 

  • Step One:  Download your course evaluation reports by using your career account to log on to purdue.evaluationkit.com 
  • Step Two:  Determine your overall score and save your report as a pdf.  
  • Step Three: Craft an email with your full name, number and title of the course you taught for which you want to apply, and your overall score. 
  • Step Four: All letters, materials, and email must be submitted to Bradley Dilger (dilger@purdue.edu) by May 15, 2024 at 11:59pm 
  • Judges will deliberate and winners will be announced the following semester.
