#BigSHARE Book Drive 2023

This September, the Purdue English Big Read hosts its first annual Big SHARE Book Drive, co-sponsored by the West Lafayette Public Library (WLPL). This event has been organized in memory of The Big Read’s generous donors, Harriet M. Crews and Sandra K. Biggs.

What:

We invite you to purchase new trade books (no textbooks, please) from local bookstores such as Von’s Book Shop, Main Street Books, Second Flight Books, and Barnes and Noble and then to donate them to us.

Donations will added to the library's catalogue or sold in the West Lafayette Public Library’s in-house bookstore, The Book Cellar, which supports the WLPL’s programs and activities.

Unsold books will be donated to Discover Books, a program that distributes texts worldwide to literacy and other community service programs.

When:

Between Wednesday, September 6 (Harriet Crews’ birthday) and Saturday, September 16 (Global Fest).

Where:

Drop off donations at any one of three locations:

How:

Please donate new book copies of fiction or poetry that inspire your own love of reading.

Feel free to share pictures on social media and tag us @purdue_english using the phrase “#BoilerUpBigRead.”

In your caption, you can share how your book donation has nurtured you love of literature and why you want other folks to read it!

Why:

The Greater Lafayette area is home to bookstores such as Vons, Second Flight, Main Street Books, and Barnes & Noble, some of which have functioned as community institutions for decades. The Sandra K. Biggs and Harriet M. Crews Book Drive encourages participants to support these enterprises, helping them (and us) to flourish for decades more to come!

It also supports the West Lafayette Public Library, founded in 1921 by the League of Women Voters. As its mission statement indicates, “The West Lafayette Public Library strives to be our community’s center for lifelong learning, the collector of our community’s written and audio-visual heritage, and the gateway to resources within and beyond the [its] walls.”
