PRISCILLA OBU-DARKO: FROM GHANA TO THE BIG TEN

Indianapolis resident, Priscilla Obu-Darko hails from Ghana. While she now resides over 5,000 miles from the country of her birth, she has put down roots at Purdue University.

Obu-Darko, who will graduate in May 2021, majors in Political Science and minors in Law and Society. She is also working to obtain a certificate in Pubic Policy. That program “prepares students with a deeper understanding of the reach and impact of policy decisions intended to create solutions to societal problems.”

In addition to life in the classroom, Obu-Darko has participated in numerous extra-curricular activities at the Big Ten school.

She is a member of the Purdue Pre-Law Society, Purdue’s non-partisan Political Discourse Club, and the African Students’ Association. In 2019, as a member of the Richard Purdue Speech and Debate Team, she participated in a national debate tournament in Santa Ana, California. Obu-Darko has even thrown herself into the world of Latin dance as a member of Purdue Salsa.

Obu-Darko’s Senior Seminar in Political Science focused on constitutional issues surrounding the death penalty and the right to privacy. In addition to capital punishment, students in the seminar studied the US Supreme Court’s work in areas such as abortion, sexual privacy, marriage equality, the right to refuse treatment, and physician assisted suicide/physician-assisted death.

Following her graduation from Purdue, Obu-Darko hopes to go to law school or pursue a career “within the local and state government in Indianapolis.”

When asked to reflect on her time at Purdue, Priscilla notes, “My time at Purdue has not only been a teaching moment but a time of holistic growth. I have made long lasting connections and encountered caring professors within the Political Science department who are genuinely interested in helping and seeing their students succeed in their careers.”

In many ways, Priscilla’s long journey has just begun.
