Keywords have become a way to categorize, to sum up in one word what someone or something is supposed to be about. Keywords are used constantly to surf the internet in search of information and entertainment. Some keywords seem to define the times that we live in; others define the work that we do, the way that we feel or reference pop culture. Drawing on the work of cultural theorist Raymond Williams, “keywords” can also be defined as words that may at first glance seem to have an obvious and clear meaning, but upon reflection are actually complex and have multiple meanings. They are words that can encompass twists and turns of history. The content of this exhibition has been inspired by artistic explorations of keywords.

The exhibition, Keywords emerged from the Fall 2009 Electronic and Time-based Art graduate studio of the same title. Over the course of 15 weeks, graduate students produced work based on their responses to and research about several keywords: relational, process, removal, waiting and location-based. The projects in the exhibition represent a variety of media including video, photography, installation, sound and social media (twitter).
