Undergraduate Program

Courses in the Art, Culture and Technology program are inherently interdisciplinary – in their content as well as their composition with a student body from across the Purdue campus. As part of the Integrated Studio Arts major, the ACT curriculum provides a broad and integrated foundation in a variety of artistic media including more traditional 2D/3D art forms that are in dialog with new media technologies and forms of time-based art. Specifically, the ACT curriculum focuses on the critical and aesthetic exploration of photography and new media technologies as tools for artistic expression. In their undergraduate studies, students learn to place their work in an art historical and critical cultural context and realize that technology does not only consist of machines with certain function but that it is an important part of the social world. As a special track, students may choose an Interdisciplinary studio focus which allows them to work in close relationship with a faculty member to select courses outside of Art and Design (and possibly outside of the College of Liberal Arts) to bring together critical inquiry and artistic exploration.

Freshman & Sophomore Years

The freshman year in the Art, Culture and Technology program consists of the Integrated Studio Arts foundational experience that introduces students to a variety of foundational principles of artistic production and media (from 2D to 3D to time-based and interactive forms). With the skills acquired in foundational classes, Art, Culture and Technology students focus on core classes in new media research and production their sophomore year, effectively preparing them for their sophomore review at the end of the year.

Junior & Senior Years

The junior year allows ACT students to apply foundational skills and basic strategies in new media art production and research to more challenging concepts at the intersection of art, culture and technology. It also gives them the opportunity to explore relevant topics in elective courses outside of the Integrated Studio Arts major. Together, these courses prepare students to find their own themes and topics of interest that transition into concrete project work in their senior year toward a final exhibition of an Art, Culture and Technology capstone work in the Integrated Studio Arts Senior Exhibition.

The Art, Technology and Culture program is offering two minors, one in Photography and Related Media and one in Electronic and Time-Based Art. These minors have a long-standing tradition in the Department of Art and Design. They have not only attracted talented students form other Art and Design fields but also majors in other Colleges on campus, from Computer Science to Engineering and Computer Graphics Technology.
