GESTURE

Searching lines, sustained gestures, mass gesture.  Object study with multiple views.  Still life may also be used to create spatial relationships within the whole.

Gesture and extended gesture

Gesture drawing helps you to understand your perceptual ability to se the "whole" all at once, even before we discover the parts. Gesture drawing helps you to then, consciously and quickly, attempt to organize parts in relation to the whole. Gesture drawing helps you to determine size and imbues a drawing with energy. It also helps you to be aware of the limits of the page and how things fit inside the frame.

Even before or with little understanding of the spatial mechanisms underlying linear perspective, you are able to resolve many of the complex spatial relationships by relying on intuitive gesture, and an application of guidelines (horizontal, vertical and diagonals) for comparative measure.

"Not until we experience a subject’s gestural expression do we really understand why (and how) each part serves to convey whatever visual or emotive meanings attract us to it in the first place. For no matter what else excites our interest some system of moving energies is always one of the attracting features". ("The Art of Responsive Drawing" by Nathan Goldstein)
