Line can be:
Pure contour
Outlines of different widths and visual weight
Broken and repeated line
Modeled or shaded line
Caligraphic
Gestural
Expressive
Mechanical
The Character of the line is also determined by the medium. For example, charcoal is a very versatile medium and is easy to apply to the page. Depending on the angle of the stick, the pressure exerted on it, the softness and hardness of the charcoal, the lines can be pale or dark, of unifying or varying widths.

can be:Fluid (pens and brushes)
Bold (dry or wet media)
Slashing
Scribble
Build tones
Appear to advance or recede within the picture plane
Slow or fast
Sharp and precise
Soft, blurred or indistinct
Line
has:Measure: length and width
Type: straight, curving, angular, repeated, rhythmical, graceful, unsteady
Direction: controls the movement of our eyes: horizontal (stability) diagonal (motion)
Location: the placement of a line(s) can divide a composition, create balance or imbalance
Character: related largely to the medium with which it is created
Line
can also possess color, value, create texture, shape and suggest space.
