"Portrait of an Old Man "
Painting
Klein depicts a half-bust portrait with the sitter in profile looking out towards the right corner. The old man’s face is tilted up, with his eyes and face looking up and out of the picture. Klein plays with the color of the piece using a very brown and neutral color palates, with the background being almost the color of his face and jacket. The artist uses shadows and contrasts to great a very natural depiction of the sitter’s face. Wearing a dark brown suit the old man is the main figure, and all the parts of the composition are emphasizing his individual characteristics like his wrinkles through the layering of paint and color, or the line/brush strokes that Kline uses to create dimension and texture in the rendering of his beard. All of which creates a very realistic portrayal of an old man.
