Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815), Italian After Guido Reni (1575-1642), Italian Ecce Homo, 1802 Ink, pigment, and paper engraving 2021.05.01 This print was produced for Christmas 1802 based on a painting in King George III’s (1738-1820) personal collection. Color printing at this time was very difficult so works would be printed in black and then artist would add color by hand. Like many engravers, Bartolozzi was trained by his father who was a goldsmith. In 1764 he settled in London and was made engraver to the king. George III greatly admired Reni’s work and purchased several canvases by him and his studio. This scene depicts Jesus during the Passion, crowned with thorns and suffering. Reni made several versions of this image during his life.
