Cultural/Historical Context

Don Baum (1922- 2008) moved from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Chicago in the 1940’s to study art history at the University of Chicago. Don was instrumental to what has become known as the Chicago School when he became the exhibitions director at the Hyde Park Art Center from 1956 to 1972. In the late 1950’s he and a group of fellow artists, including H.C.Westermann and Leon Golub became known as the “Monster Roster”. A few years later he hosted the first ”Hairy Who” exhibitions that featured the work of Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, Karl Wirsum. He also exhibited the later Chicago Imagists, including Roger Brown, Ed Paschke, Barbara Rossi and Christina Ramberg. Domus is the last series of works created by Baum; they featured found objects turned into houses.
