Mixed oil and tempera coated with colored varnish on curved wooden panel. There is cursive writing, a stamp imprint and other writings on the back. The panel is bordered in red, green, and geometric gold leaf designs in red, green, pink, and black. There are a total of 12 Cyrillic captions within this border. There are fourteen images within the central image, each depicting a different scene in Jesus's life. The middle painting shows Jesus, a man with brown hair and beard clothed in red tunic and green cloak within a white mandorla. The top of the middle image shows a mad in a white loin cloth on the right, and an angel on the left. Below, the man in the loincloth in shown in a pool of water.

Spirit Made Tangible: The Scheuring Icon Collection (2006)

Cultural/Historical Context

The central image of this icon is Christ’s Resurrection (in Greek “Anastasis”) including his descent into hell. The surrounding scenes refer to the twelve major Orthodox festivals. From left to right they are: the Birth of the Virgin, the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, the Annunciation, the Nativity, Christ’s Presentation in the Temple, the Baptism of Christ, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Transfiguration, the Old Testament Holy Trinity, the Elevation of the Holy Cross, and the Dormition of the Virgin. The icon is executed in a provincial style in which the figures have rather large heads and heavily shadowed eyes. A cable pattern ornaments the border.
