The painting of Christ shows a man with brown hair and beard dressed in red tunic with gold line work and solid green cloak. He holds a gospel book in one hand and gestures blessings with the other. The riza gives him an ornate halo with Greek lettering and floral motif backgrounds. Makers marks in bottom left halo and under bottom edge.

Cultural/Historical Context

During the 18th century, the desire for elaborate ornamentation on icons led to the invention of brass and silver icon covers called rizas. The riza of this icon is silver and covers the entire work except of the figure of Christ. The patterns on the surrounding riza were created using the engraving and repoussé techniques. This riza was originally created to cover another icon (2005.02.063). The riza was subsequently removed and a new icon was painted in the style of the original image and placed under the older riza.
