Having received her doctorate (Ph.D. plus Dr. phil.), she taught at Mills College (CA), Mount Holyoke College (MA), and at the University of Bordeaux in France before joining the Purdue faculty in 1991. She was also Guest Professor and Resident Director for one year at the Albert-Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg, Germany where she directed the Purdue-Ohio- Indiana Universities Consortium with 24 students for one year.

Her first book is titled Die Metapher und ihre Krise: Zur Dymanik der Bilderschrift Jean Pauls (New York: Peter Lang, 1987). She also published three edited books: Languages of Visuality: Crossings between Science, Art, Politics, and Literature (Detroit Wayne State University Press, 1996); Comparative Cinema (Lewiston NY: Edwin Mellen Press, 2008), and J.G. Herder: From Cognition to Cultural Science (Heidelberg: Synchron Wissenschaftsverlag, 2016). This new book is based on the 2014 International Herder conference Prof. Allert hosted at Purdue University while being the elected President of the International Herder Society. For this conference and the book she was then awarded a Global Synergy Grant (2014-15). Most recently, her book manuscript G.E. Lessing: Poetic Constellatons between the Visual and the Verbal has been accepted by all the three editors of the book series HERMEIA to be published with Synchron Publisher (forthcoming). She has many refereed journal articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and reviews and has directed or served on numerous Ph.D. dissertations.
