PLEASE NOTE: Students applying for Fall 2027, the plan of study for the World Languages and Cultures BA concentration is still being finalized, but it is expected to closely resemble the current Chinese plan of study, which provides a helpful preview of the curriculum. 

Our program is dedicated to fostering a deep understanding of the Chinese language, culture, and society. At Purdue, studying Chinese goes far beyond language instruction—it offers a comprehensive academic and cultural experience that allows students to engage with Chinese culture and Chinese-speaking communities from multiple perspectives.

We provide a full sequence of Chinese language courses (CHNS 101–402) designed for learners at all levels, along with content courses on Chinese culture, film, literature, calligraphy, and civilization. Through these courses, students not only develop strong linguistic proficiency but also gain insight into the history, cultural traditions, artistic expressions, and modern transformations that shape contemporary China.

The Chinese Program is a vibrant and welcoming community where students can participate in a variety of cultural events and study abroad opportunities, while connecting with peer language learners and native speakers. Many students choose to major or minor in Chinese, combining their language study with majors in business, engineering, science, or liberal arts to expand their global perspectives and career possibilities. Knowledge of Chinese is a valuable asset in today’s interconnected world—opening doors to opportunities in international business, government, education, technology, and beyond. Whether you are beginning your study of Chinese or continuing to build on prior experience, the Purdue Chinese Program invites you to explore the language and culture of one of the world’s oldest and most dynamic civilizations.

Before undertaking Chinese as a major concentration or as a minor, the student must establish in Chinese equivalent to Chinese Level IV. Proficiency may be established by taking and passing Chinese 20200, by examination or by other evidence acceptable by the School of Language and Cultures.

• A minimum GPA of B- (2.67/4.0) in the Major/Concentration is required for the student to graduate. No course with a grade lower than C- may be counted toward the major.
• An average grade of “B” (3.0/4) or above in the minor is required. No course with a grade lower than “C” may count toward the minor. 

If you have prior experience learning Chinese, the online placement test will help determine which CHNS course level is the best fit for you.

Beyond the Classroom

  • Weekly Chinese Tea Hours in SC 131—hosted in rotation by Chinese faculty—where participants enjoy tea, snacks, and casual conversation while taking part in fun activities such as boba-making, festival celebrations, and Chinese games. Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of Chinese proficiency or enrollment in Chinese courses.
  • Biweekly calligraphy meetings hosted by the Chinese calligraphy club, offering hands-on practice with brush writing and traditional aesthetics.
  • Chinese Film Appreciation Nights provide opportunities to explore contemporary and classic Chinese cinema. Everyone is welcome to join, and we’ll provide snacks as well.
• Study Abroad
  • Learn more about immersing yourself in one of the most widely spoken languages in the world while engaging in global teamwork.
