_module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #000000\">Com 489: Research Credit<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In addition to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/information-for-students\/\" style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">internship credit (COM 49000)<\/a><\/span>, the School offers students two other ways to pursue their interests in more depth: research credit and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/directed-studies\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">directed studies<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 Both are available for 1-3 hours (variable credit), both require faculty advisors, and the forms for both are available below and on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/directed-studies\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">directed studies page<\/span>.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Research Credit (COM 48900)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The purpose of COM 48900 is to give students hands-on experience doing communication research.\u00a0 By working with a faculty member on a research project, students will gain expertise in specific kinds of research, insight into whether or not they might be interested in graduate studies, and closer relationships with faculty that might result in mentoring and letters of recommendation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\">Instructions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Before registering for the course, a student must find a faculty member who has an active project in need of student assistance.\u00a0 The faculty member, by signing the student into the course, agrees to supervise the student\u2019s research and help the student gain research experience.\u00a0 The learning agreement below must be signed by both student and faculty members and deposited with the director of undergraduate studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/com-489-learning-agreement1.pdf\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">COM 489 Learning Agreement<\/span>\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000\">Details<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The course can be taken for 1-3 credit hours.\u00a0 For each credit hour, students are expected to work 3 hours per week during the regular spring\/fall semester.\u00a0 During the 8-week summer session, students are expected to work 6 hours per week in order to earn 1 credit hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Due to the pass\/no pass structure, as long as students work the requisite number of hours, they will receive passing grades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The course can be repeated for credit an unlimited number of times.\u00a0 Because it is a pass\/no pass class, however, it cannot count toward major or minor requirements.\u00a0 And only up to 3 total hours can count toward the 120 hours required for graduation as elective hours.\u00a0 These 3 hours can be earned in a single semester (9 research hours per week) or over multiple semesters with fewer research hours per week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">No research learning agreements will be accepted after 30 calendar days from the first day of the semester.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Com 489: Research Credit In addition to\u00a0internship credit (COM 49000), the School offers students two other ways to pursue their interests in more depth: research credit and\u00a0directed studies.\u00a0 Both are available for 1-3 hours (variable credit), both require faculty advisors, and the forms for both are available below and on the\u00a0directed studies page.
