_module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #000000\">COM 491: Directed Study<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">In addition to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/information-for-students\/\" style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">internship credit (COM 49000)<\/a><\/span>, the School offers students two other ways to pursue their interests in more depth:\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/research-credit\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">research credit<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and directed studies.\u00a0 Both are available for 1-3 hours (variable credit), both require faculty advisors, and the forms for both are available below and on the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/research-credit\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000000;text-decoration: underline\">research credit page<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Directed Study (COM 49100)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Directed studies give students the chance to design their own classes.\u00a0 With the help of their faculty advisors, students can investigate topics of interest that are not covered in regularly scheduled course offerings.\u00a0 The directed study format allows students to gain expertise in a specialized subject, design assignments that best fit their learning styles, and work more closely with faculty than in a regular classroom setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\">Instructions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Before registering for the course, a student must find a faculty member who is willing to advise the student on the chosen topic.\u00a0 The student and faculty member will work together to develop a syllabus for the class that includes learning outcomes, assignments, and grading standards. Then they will both complete and sign the second document below for submission to the undergraduate committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Students wishing to take directed studies must follow all instructions on the application page. A completed application packet includes the following items:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The completed application page \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/COM491.DirectedStudyApplicationCoverPage.pdf\" title=\"COM 491 Directed Study Application\">https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/communication\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/COM491.DirectedStudyApplicationCoverPage.pdf<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">A statement of purpose: why is this course needed? How will it contribute to your education?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">A copy of the student\u2019s transcript (an unofficial copy is fine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">A proposed syllabus\/plan for the class that includes learning outcomes, assignments, and grading standards<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Incomplete packets will be returned to students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">This, then, is how a student can pursue a directed study:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">The student takes the completed packet to the instructor to sign\u00a0<strong>no later than the Friday of the first week of classes.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Student or instructor takes the completed and signed packet to BRNG 2114 and leaves it for the undergraduate director.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The undergraduate director approves the packet or contacts the student about revisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">If approved, the undergraduate director passes the packet to the assistant schedule deputy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"_mce_tagged_br\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">The assistant schedule deputy informs the student via email that the directed study has been approved and provides instructions on how to request a variable title (VT) course in Scheduling Assistant.
