Each member comes from their own unique background, but they all have one thing in common: their love for our school. These successful alumni travel from across the country each year to give strategic advice and support driving the Lamb School forward.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparation for the upcoming board meeting in April,&nbsp;I conducted interviews to help you get to know each board member. Kicking off our &#8220;Get to Know Your Advisory Board&#8221; blog series is Josh Miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cla.purdue.edu\/academic\/communication\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Picture1-1.png\" alt=\"Josh Miles headshot\" class=\"wp-image-49\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>A podcast host, keynote speaker, Chief Marketing Officer for two organizations, author, photographer,&nbsp;Lamb School Advisory Board member,&nbsp;and father, it\u2019s no surprise Josh Miles is also a caffeine addict.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/joshuamiles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Josh Miles (opens in a new tab)\">Josh Miles<\/a> graduated from the Lamb School in 1999 with a double major in Communication with a focus in advertising and Visual Communication and Design.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>What is your favorite Purdue memory?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Move-in weekend freshman year. There\u2019s a newfound freedom&nbsp;when&nbsp;you\u2019re exploring campus&nbsp;for the first time. You meet a bunch of people that would by your&nbsp;friends&nbsp;freshman year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite all-time Purdue memory would be getting to do the&nbsp;TedX&nbsp;event as a speaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Watch Josh\u2019s keynote speech \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The paradox of brand experience (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LWrlJccg828\" target=\"_blank\">The paradox of brand experience<\/a>\u201d from&nbsp;TedxPurdueU&nbsp;in 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>What impact are you making as a member of the advisory board?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a big role in rebranding&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lamb School,&nbsp;and that\u2019s been a&nbsp;really fun&nbsp;project to work on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Could you talk a little about your current role and how you got there?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I owned a branding and marketing agency for 16&nbsp;years. I&nbsp;sold&nbsp;it to my&nbsp;business partner 2 years ago and went to work for one of&nbsp;my&nbsp;clients, Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) which is&nbsp;a membership organization&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;marketing world&nbsp;specifically&nbsp;for marketers in architecture, engineering, and construction firms, so it\u2019s very niche. I had been part of conferences as a&nbsp;member and&nbsp;a&nbsp;speaker and&nbsp;the timing worked&nbsp;really well&nbsp;to go on from the company that I owned.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Between everything you are a part of, how do you find work-life balance?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s\u00a0really difficult\u00a0to find work-life balance.\u00a0It\u2019s hard to find a\u00a0<em>work<\/em>\u00a0balance. I just get excited about a lot of things.\u00a0I figured out later in life that I\u2019m a Type A. I\u2019m probably\u00a0the most lowkey,\u00a0chill\u00a0Type A\u00a0you\u2019ll ever meet.\u00a0I enjoy having an impact,\u00a0and I like exploring new things.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Is there a project you are currently working on that is most rewarding to you?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking and teaching. I like helping people understanding the\u00a0topic,\u00a0and\u00a0leaving one\u00a0of my talks they can walk out and\u00a0start\u00a0applying\u00a0it. When you\u2019re teaching, you can see people\u00a0<em>getting<\/em>\u00a0it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Do you have a mantra or saying that you live by?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of the rules, but I don\u2019t think they apply to me.\u201d&nbsp;I mean this in a positive way. Don\u2019t live&nbsp;by standards&nbsp;other&nbsp;people&nbsp;set.&nbsp;Do your own thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>What is your top piece of advice for current Lamb School students?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I believe your college experience&nbsp;is largely what you choose to make of it.&nbsp;As good of a school as&nbsp;Purdue is,&nbsp;it\u2019s up to you to go after&nbsp;opportunities&nbsp;and make the most of them. Don\u2019t wait&nbsp;around&nbsp;for other people to hand it to you. You&nbsp;have to&nbsp;chart&nbsp;your&nbsp;own course and chase the things you are most interested in.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When he was at Purdue, Josh was involved in American Institute of Graphic Artists and Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and worked for Purdue Printing Services.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Any final thoughts you\u2019d like to share?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve been out of&nbsp;Purdue for just over 20 years,&nbsp;and as much as I thought I had charted&nbsp;my path, I\u2019m still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.&nbsp;I\u2019d encourage current students&nbsp;to get&nbsp;comfortable&nbsp;being uncomfortable.&nbsp;You can change your mind or your career.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For more information about Josh or to connect with him, visit:&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joshmiles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.joshmiles.com<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Brian Lamb School of Communication Advisory Board is comprised of seven alumni from the College of Liberal Arts.
