Biography:
Blake’s communication career began in Oxford, Ohio where he chased stories for the community’s local news site. His professional writing has included science journalism, technical communication, and science-medical copywriting. Now, he is an instructor and doctoral research student in Purdue University's Brian Lamb School of Communication.
Research and Teaching:
Blake’s research focuses on the role of affective processing routes in risk communication. Theoretically, he is especially interested in inoculation theory, commonly thought of as prebunking. Pragmatically, he hopes to help inform tailored approaches to combat post-truth issues such as mis-/disinformation and manipulation.
Blake’s teaching aims to equip students with theoretical and practical insights. Pedagogically, he employs a lecture-seminar approach encouraging discussion, debate, and the open exchange of ideas. He uses projects to simulate practice and foster active learning. At Purdue, he has taught courses in health communication, interviewing, small group communication, computer-mediated communication, and science communication.
Blake has undergraduate degrees in biology and journalism from Miami (OH) University and a master's in science writing from Johns Hopkins University.
