feminist political ecology, decolonizing and collaborative methodologies, critical data studies, environmental justice

Laura Zanotti received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Washington in 2008 and joined the faculty at Purdue in 2009. She is appointed in the Anthropology Department and has affiliations with the Critical Data Studies Collective, Institute for Sustainable Futures, American Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, and the Native American and Indigenous Studies programs.

Zanotti is a feminist political ecologist and interdisciplinary social scientist who partners with communities to support how Indigenous Peoples, Traditional Peoples, and Local Communities’ livelihoods and well-being can be sustained and to identify the pathways that shape just futures. In all of her work she stitches together insights from engaged anthropology and visual anthropology to create collaborative projects. In addition to feminist political ecology, she finds kinship with decolonizing approaches to research inquiry alongside insights from cultural geography, Indigenous studies, and Latin American studies. She specializes in collaborative, transdisciplinary projects and creating ethnographic teams. She is committed to feminist, antiracist, and decolonizing scholarship.

She has partnered with the Mebêngôkre-Kayapó Peoples, Brazil, for almost twenty years and currently is a partner to the Djamtire/Kôkôjãgoti Media Collective, Aldeia A'Ukre. She is currently working on team-based and community-driven projects around the United States, in Latin America, and throughout the globe on media sovereignty, environmental justice, and community resilience and healing.

She is dedicated to opening and transforming the academy and providing undergraduate and graduate students fruitful and productive experiences to thrive in the multicultural and interconnected world in which they live and work. In order to better support students, she has completed IMPACT and SAFE Zone training, advises and leads service-learning and international programs on campus and abroad, and initiated an inclusive syllabus project on campus. She won the Purdue College of Liberal Arts Graduate Teaching and Mentoring Award and the American Studies Program Social Justice Faculty Award in 2018, the Department of Anthropology Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013 and was the recipient of the Faculty Appreciation Award in American Studies in 2012. Her work has resulted in several collaborative projects and video tours, public outreach and community outputs. Read more about her work and ways to engage by following the link to her website below. Zanotti’s work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Sigrid Rausing Trust, the Mellon Foundation, and Purdue University.
