Toya Mary Okonkwo graduated with her Ph.D. in English Literature as the first Black woman in the program history of Texas Christian University.  Her research focuses on contemporary Black radical imaginations and magical realism in global literature and interweaves her undergraduate degrees in Theatre and Humanities with the neurobiology of brain plasticity, girlhood studies, astrophysics and creative writing into a research agenda that centers a global understanding of interconnectedness.
