Promoted to Professor
Languages and Cultures, SC

Becky A. Brown is a Professor of Linguistics in the School of Languages and Cultures and in the Interdisciplinary Program in Linguistics. She completed her M.A. in Linguistics at Louisiana State University and her Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Texas – Austin.

Brown's research centers on sociolinguistics in general, and language contact and structural borrowing in particular, with linguistic analyses drawn mainly from Romance languages as well as North American varieties of French. Her primary analytical focus has been on phonological, syntactic, and morphological features of endangered language varieties towards a more informed understanding of language variation and change. With support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Purdue Research Foundation, and the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, she has been able to investigate different stages of the evolution of Louisiana French to assist in the codification and the standardization of this variety for local language maintenance efforts. More recently her work has broadened to encompass sociocultural linguistics in the subfields of linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, and socially oriented forms of discourse analysis.

Brown also specializes in innovative methodologies for student learning and has garnered numerous distinctions including the Charles B. Murphy Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching, in addition to induction in The Book of Great Teachers and the Purdue University Teaching Academy. Furthermore, she is a two-time recipient of the School of Languages and Cultures Outstanding Teaching Award and the College of Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Award.
