Michael G. Smith received his PhD from Georgetown University in 1991. He taught at the University of Dayton before coming to Purdue in 1996, where he now offers courses in Russian history, as well as History of the Space Age and Topics in Global History. His first book, Language and Power in the Creation of the USSR, 1917–1953 (Mouton de Gruyter Publishers, 1998), surveyed sociolinguistics and language planning in the Soviet Union. Michael has also written a series of articles and book chapters on the Russian revolution and Soviet nationalities policies in Azerbaijan. More recently, he published Rockets and Revolution: A Cultural History of Early Spaceflight (University of Nebraska Press, 2014), and he is currently developing textbook and monograph studies in aerospace history.
