Wunderkammer: a showcase of student curatorial talent at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Galleries, is proud to present “Wunderkammer”, an exhibition curated by students in the AD491 Introduction to Curatorial Practices class.

Wunderkammers, by definition, are “a place where a collection of curiosities and rarities is exhibited,” also known as “wonder chamber” or “cabinet of curiosity” (Oxford Dictionary).

This exhibition is the culmination of work completed over the course of the fall semester by students in the Introduction to Curatorial Practices class. Each student developed a hypothetical exhibition using works from the permanent collection, crafting a theme, writing a proposal, and composing labels. The exhibition features a single artwork from each student’s proposal, chosen as the best representation of their individual themes.

“It is extremely important for our students to gain practical experience in our classes. By curating an exhibition from concept to hang, Purdue students are given hands-on training not available in other universities,” said Kirstin Gotway, instructor of the course and curator of Purdue University Galleries' Permanent Collection.

Gotway emphasized the uniqueness of each exhibition, stating, “Each proposed exhibition reflects the diversity of interests and research areas of the students, highlighting that curation is a deeply personal reflection of the curator.”

“Wunderkammer: by the Introduction to Curatorial Practices class” will be on display in Rueff Galleries West from Feb. 17 to 27. Admission to all exhibitions and events is free and open to the public. Purdue Galleries invites everyone to immerse themselves in the “cabinet of curiosity” and celebrate the creativity and dedication of AD491 students through their exhibition.

“Delicate and Filled with Dynamite” will be on display in Rueff Galleries East from Feb. 3 to 27. Admission to all exhibitions and events is free and open to the public. Purdue Galleries invites the public to experience this thought-provoking exhibition, which offers a compelling reflection on race, history and identity through innovative artistic expression.
