Excellence in Discovery and Creative Endeavors Awards

The College of Liberal Arts invites nominations for the Excellence in Discovery and Creative Endeavors Awards (formerly called the Discovery Excellence Awards). Excellence is defined in terms of the productivity, the quality of scholarship or creative work, disciplinary and interdisciplinary recognition, and the impact of the work being evaluated. This program is intended to recognize excellence in discovery and creativity by CLA tenure-track faculty.

The award criteria focus on the quality and impact, as well as the breadth and reach, of discovery activities, as demonstrated by such evidence as research or creative output, national and international awards and other recognitions, grants and other research support, leadership in scholarly organizations, interdisciplinary collaborations, citations by fellow scholars, and impact on the larger world.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this award, nominees must be faculty members with at least a half-time appointment in the College of Liberal Arts, and must have served on the Purdue faculty for at least two years at the time of nomination. Nominees may come from any department or school within the College. Individuals who have won this award (or the CLA Discovery Excellence Award for the Creative Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences) within the past seven years are not eligible.

Award Criteria

  • Quality and impact of discovery activity, as demonstrated by such evidence as research or creative output, national and international awards and other recognitions, grants and other research support, leadership in scholarly organizations, and citation by fellow scholars.
  • Breadth and reach of discovery activity, as demonstrated by such evidence as interdisciplinary activity, collaborations with scholars in other institutions and in other colleges at Purdue, and impact on the larger world.

Procedures

Nominations for the award may be made by any member of the faculty and should be submitted via InfoReady. A link to the nomination form will be made available and announced at the appropriate time. The nomination should include the following:

  • A letter of nomination not exceeding two pages. Ordinarily, this letter is written by the faculty member initiating the nomination. It should highlight the main achievements justifying the award, including comparisons with peers in the nominee’s field. If more than one faculty member nominates the same candidate, or if it is warranted by unusual circumstances, the nominee’s department head may determine who will write the letter.
  • A complete curriculum vitae for the nominee.

A review panel will be convened by the dean to evaluate the proposals. The review results, which will distinguish between Assistant and Associate/Full professors, will be used by the Deans Committee (which will consist of the Dean and Associate Deans) in making the final decision.

There will be two CLA-wide awards - one for Assistant Professors, and one for Associate or Full Professors. In the event that no nominations are made for this award in a given year (or if either the screening committee or the Deans Committee finds none of the nominees sufficiently deserving), no award will be made for that year.

Award

The winners of the awards will receive an inscribed plaque and will be honored during the annual Faculty Awards Banquet. In addition, $1,000.00 will be transferred to the winner’s departmental account for professional expenses.
