Job-Ready Intern

Public Relations and Strategic Communication

liftUPlift Worldwide
Chicago, IL

Why did you apply to intern at liftUPlift?
This internship hit so many of my deeply held interests—women power, entrepreneurship, conscious consumerism and ending violence against women. Not only did the company fit my values, but the title “strategic public relations intern” completely tied into my career goals. I wanted to work an internship where I was inspired, proud and fulfilled. liftUPlift.com is the first e-commerce marketplace for only women-owned businesses in an attempt to close the dramatic funding gap and to promote conscious consumerism. I am helping with public relations for the International Ally Awards, a gala that raises funds to help end violence against women and also honors those whose work unlocks the potential of women and girls worldwide—that’s something I can be proud of.

Describe your typical day as an intern.
Each day is so different, which is what I thrive on. We usually meet up to discuss daily goals each morning and then break off to do individual work. Any day I could be designing, writing press releases, event planning, building sponsor and partner relationships, managing our show room or writing articles. The day is broken up with powerful discussions, music breaks and mini meetings. We also sometimes host evening events for networking and Lunchbox Lessons where women come together to discuss a certain aspect of entrepreneurship, everything from branding to fair-trade practices.

Describe the most meaningful experience you’ve had as an intern.
I have met some incredible women and had conversations with such lasting impact at this internship. These are the experiences that mean the most. For instance, last week we met with one of our makers called Loom Chicago. This company employs refugees from across the globe to come together, share their various skills and handmake beautiful products such as scarves and hats. Getting to share the work of these incredible organizations and promoting conscious consumerism has meant the world.

How has your internship prepared you for your career?
I have gotten to touch so many different aspects of public relations from day one. I am building a skill set quickly in the challenging, quick-changing startup space. Not only have I been learning public relations hard skills for my career, but I have been learning such useful soft skills by working in the startup game.

What recommendations do you have for other interns?
This is your time to experiment. Find an internship that really resonates with you and where you will have the opportunity to really learn and touch many different aspects of the business. Say yes to everything and dive in full force. It is a chance to sample a career and a lifestyle and really grow and get to know yourself professionally.
