House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security
Describe the most meaningful experience you had as an intern.
When the interns of the committee, including myself, were able to take a behind the scenes tour of the National Archives, the significance of the miraculous opportunity we had this summer suddenly consumed my mind. We were staring at the most important documents in our nation’s history. We were looking at the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the U.S. Constitution. The overwhelming sense of history and patriotism made me realize, we were part of history this summer. We had seen Washington D.C. in a very historic period and were part of the beating heart of American democracy. The bills we had been a part of (including the reauthorization of the Department of Homeland Security), would be forever inscribed in history. We were observants of great figures on both sides of the political spectrum shaping our nation. Then, we were able to go on a special tour and see handwritten letters from historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, which made me think that in about 150 years, will someone be looking at something that we were fortunate enough to be a part of?
What surprised you most about your internship?
I was surprised most by the people of my internship, everyone had an incredible story to share. Due to the fact that there are law enforcement officials assigned to work with the committee, as well the highly-experienced staff, there were some incredible stories to be told. Ranging from work experiences to personal connections, I was floored by the lives some of the staff had led leading up to the committee, both in the political and law enforcement fields.
How did you apply your Liberal Arts-skills to your internship position?
I was able to apply the great work ethic I learned from my time at Purdue in Washington D.C., and it has proven to be invaluable. The time management skills that I acquired throughout my experiences in college translated to a very efficient work ethic and it helped me manage the numerous projects I was given. The professionalism I have seen from my professors, as well as the well-rounded student body at Purdue taught me how to interact and flourish in a professional working environment.
How has your internship prepared you for your career?
It has given me an invaluable insight into how the federal government functions, as well as how federal law enforcement is supervised and organized. I was able to connect with and speak to staff from many different organizations which helped me narrow area of focus in law enforcement. The questions I was able to ask them on how to take the next step in my career and how to make myself stand out will help me for the rest of my career. This summer has only fueled my desire to pursue a career in law enforcement and it has given me the confidence I need to advance with my career. It also has made me very excited to meet and work with people who have the same goals as myself. Overall, this summer showed me that anything is possible with hard work and a respectful demeanor, as well as teaching me to pursue my passions.
