Save the Children
How has your internship helped build skills and clarify your career goals?
My internship involves conducting celebrity research for Save the Children's current and potential brand ambassadors. This is done by checking their social media pages and STC's top tier media outlets. Because I am especially interested in social media public relations, this job stresses the importance of brand management and being faithful to one's public image and core beliefs. While research is not very creative, I see the value in the work. It has confirmed for me, however, that I don't want a career focused entirely on research. I hope to pursue a more diverse and creative position in the field of public relations.
How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills in your internship?
Being able to read news reports and social media posts and pull relevant material is a key skill. Recognizing what information is important to Save the Children and their brand is essential. I have learned the value of research within my course work. This has allowed me to easily apply my acquired research skills to this internship.
What is a typical day like as an intern, any challenging or exciting aspects?
Most challenging part: I am doing research from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Constant research can be tedious and I regret there is no variety in my current position. Most exciting part: When I was in high school, I sponsored a child with Save the Children because I was influenced by actress and STC ambassador, Jennifer Garner. It has been exciting working for the organization in their talent relations department and learn more about celebrity influence on their audience both negative and positive.
