Lafayette Urban Ministry
How has your internship helped build skills and clarify your career goals?
During my time working for the Lafayette Urban Ministry, I have been able to dive deeper into politics. I am currently writing about our local representative and learning how she has helped Hoosier Families.
How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills in your internship?
I use my skills to be able to understand different efforts being put into Hoosier Families. My sociology classes have drastically helped me understand the difficulties related to your income level.
What is the a typical day like as an intern, any challenging or exciting aspects?
Currently, I am working on articles for our newsletter to inform the community about what it means to be an advocate and local people that we should look up to. In August, I will begin seminars to teach about being an advocate and how local people of our community can become on. The most exciting thing about my role is that I’ll be making a difference in Lafayette! The one thing that surprised me the most about my internship was just how important LUM is to many different people in our community. So many people think you have to travel to another country to help people, but so often they forget about their neighbors and the people close to them that need help. The most meaningful experience I have had to far was watching different members of the community come into LUM and ask for help. This made me change my career path. I knew that I have to make a difference. I won’t stop until I’ve helped as many people as I can.
