Amanda Veile, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology

Class Title: Paleofantasies

Class Description: The "Paleo Diet" or Caveman Diet, recommends eating as Ancient Paleolithic hunter-gatherers did - high protein, low carbohydrates - for optimum health and weight loss. "Paleo parenting" is a trend founded on tenets like home births, co-sleeping, and prolonged breastfeeding. These attempts to reconstruct out past are only tenuously supported by science. Biological anthropologists can address these romanticized interpretations of our ancestral past, and evaluate whether there are real benefits to engaging in "paleo-behaviors" today. Dr. Veile will discuss these conceptual issues, using examples from the years she spent living with hunter-gatherers in Bolivia and Venezuela.
