Mara Battiste received her BA in Studio Art from Indiana University in 2005. She is a multi-disciplinary artist and art educator at Lafayette Jefferson High School, where she teaches photography and digital design. She has continued her education with courses at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.
As an artist, Mara is directly influenced by the lives and objects that inhabit her immediate environment, and indirectly shaped by social politics and gender stereotypes enforced by media and popular culture. She aims to explore and deconstruct predetermined roles by presenting visually seductive imagery that lures the viewer in, and then lingers to confront them with their reactions. Her work often appropriates the identities of enduring over-generalizations and places them within a critical yet empathetic context. By providing a more complex and humanized view of such two-dimensional characters, she hopes to persuade viewers to reexamine why they think the way they think.
