Approved Texts

Every ICaP course must be assigned a rhetoric—a textbook which facilitates the explicit writing instruction necessary to achieve the learning outcomes for our courses. We want ICaP instructors to select texts which fit their teaching philosophies and dovetail with their research agendas. At the same time, we need to offer students consistent experiences which help them achieve course outcomes.

Traditional textbooks

We suggest the latest edition of any of these five books. Previous editions can be okay, but students may run into trouble with electronic versions.

  • Bullock & Bertsch, Norton Field Guide to Writing, standalone, or with handbook and/or Readings
  • Johnson-Sheehan, Writing Today
  • Palmquist, Joining the Conversation: A Guide and Handbook for Writers
  • Ramage, Bean, & Johnson, Allyn Bacon Guide to Writing, brief or full edition
  • Roen, Maid, & Rankins-Robinson, McGraw-Hill Guide: Writing for College, Writing for Life

Alternatives

Using a platform like McGraw-Hill Connect or Top Hat is also acceptable.

We also welcome the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and have developed a track using publications like Writing Spaces. Please contact us to learn more about our approach to OER.
