Divine Likeness: Interpreting Orthodox Icons
March 7 through April 23, 2016
Robert L. Ringel Gallery, Stewart Center
The permanent collection of Purdue University Galleries is home to a collection of Orthodox Christian icons, a gift of Katherine “Betsy” Scheuring. Russian iconography combines theological, aesthetic and technical considerations into powerful and intimate objects of beauty and devotion. Curated by Ashley M. Purpura, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor in the Purdue University Department of Religious Studies, this exhibition will center on how religious belief affects believers and their traditions, and will address themes of Hymns, Saint’s Stories, and Communities.
