Specialization
Dr. McElhattan’s research addresses punishment and social control, the sociology of law, and relationships between criminal justice policy and social inequalities. He focuses primarily on the set of formal and informal barriers — known as “collateral consequences” — that people face as a result of contact with the criminal legal system. His work has appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, Criminology & Public Policy, Law & Society Review, Law & Social Inquiry, and Punishment & Society.
