History Students Win Writing Honors
Please join me in congratulating Department of History PhD student John C. Kennedy, who won second place in the graduate student category of the National Council of Black Studies (NCBS) 2015 Student Essay Competition. His paper is titled "All Clumps of People Turn Out to Be Individuals on Close Inspection: Zora Neale Hurston and the Politics of Individualism.” The paper was completed with Jennifer Freeman Marshall, assistant professor of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies during her fall 2012 Zora Neale Hurston course, with additional revisions under her supervision.
History major Katie Martin, who will graduate with her BA this week, won an honorable mention in the second annual Peggy Seigel Writing Competition, which recognizes undergraduate research and writing in Indiana history. Katie’s paper, an edited version of her Honors thesis, is titled "'We Can Take It!': Race and the Civilian Conservation Corps in Indiana, 1934‒1941.” Katie’s mentors for her thesis were Nancy Gabin, associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in history and Kathryn Cramer Brownell, assistant professor of history.
