Brenda Ramirez
Please join me in congratulating Brenda Ramirez, who has been named a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. Brenda, a senior studying in the Department of Sociology and the Brian Lamb School of Communication, is majoring in law and society and corporate communication. After graduation, she plans to study refugees and migration from a global perspective. She is planning a future in law and public policy with the goal of improving how immigrant populations are supplied with needed services and resources.
Rhodes Scholars are chosen not only for their outstanding scholarly achievements, but also for their character, commitment to others and the common good, and potential for leadership. The scholarship awards graduate study at the University of Oxford for two to three years. Only 32 U.S. students are selected as Rhodes Scholars annually, and Purdue’s last Rhodes Scholar was Robert Orrill, who graduated with a degree in English in 1961.
Within the College, Brenda has participated in research as a Clarence E. Dammon Dean’s Scholar and a Margo Katherine Wilke undergraduate research intern, the latter of which gave her the opportunity to coauthor a paper presented at a national communications conference. She is also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Liberal Arts Dean’s Ambassadors, DRIVEN, and Mortar Board. She is a student and mentor in the Honors College, has participated in the Purdue Institute for Civic Communication’s Washington Program, and is an intern and interpreter at O’Brien & Dekker Attorneys at Law. Brenda was supported in the application process by the National and International Scholarships Office.
Brenda is one of Purdue’s most outstanding undergraduate students, and her passion for addressing global issues is inspiring. We wish her the best of luck in her final interviews for the Rhodes Scholarship!
