Robert E. May
Please join me in congratulating Robert E. May, professor emeritus in the Department of History, for publishing "The Irony of Confederate Diplomacy: Visions of Empire, the Monroe Doctrine, and the Quest for Nationhood."
An expert on U.S. nineteenth-century "filibustering" (illegal private military expeditions against foreign countries), Professor May has written three books and many articles about the subject. Professor May lectures widely on the subject, and in 2006 gave five presentations about filibustering in Costa Rica. Published in The Journal of Southern History, Bob writes about the Confederate's South short-lived vision for executing a full-fledged foreign affairs service as a sovereign nation. Bob cites the works of several department historians, including Harold D. Woodman.
