Please join me in congratulating Kathryn Cramer Brownell, assistant professor in history, for publishing “ ‘Ideological Plugola,’ ‘Elitist Gossip,’ and the Need for Cable Television,” in Media Nation: The Political History of News in Modern America (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2017).
From the creation of newspapers with national reach in the late nineteenth century to the lightning-fast dispatches and debates of today's Internet, the media have played an enormous role in modern American politics. In this collection, scholars such as Katie have come together to explore the importance of the relationship between political culture and the news media. Katie's contribution into this book uses newly opened archives to excavate the role of Richard Nixon’s Office of Telecommunication Policy in promoting the political and economic possibilities of cable television. This is her first major scholarly publication on the political history of the cable news industry, the topic of her new book project.
