Randy Roberts
Please join me in congratulating Randy Roberts, distinguished professor of history, who has been named a 150th Anniversary Professor in recognition of his exceptional teaching and mentorship at Purdue. The Office of the Provost will name 10 faculty with this designation, which coincides with Purdue’s upcoming sesquicentennial celebration.
Randy teaches courses on the history of World War I, World War II, and sports that are renowned among our students. He is a dynamic and gifted teacher.
His distinguished teaching record includes holding the Charles Boal Ewing Chair in Military History at the United States Military Academy, where he taught during the 2015-2016 academic year. His teaching achievements include receiving the Charles B. Murphy Teaching Award (1991) and recognition as the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Indiana Professor of the Year (2006).
Randy is a founding member of Purdue’s Teaching Academy (1997). His teaching also has been recognized with the Kenneth T. Kofmehl Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award (2012-2013), as Teacher of the Year in the School of Liberal Arts (2011), and as the Teacher of the Year in the School of Liberal Arts (1997). He also has received the Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Award (1996) and the Mansfield University Society of Honors Distinguished Educator Award (2009). He was honored with the Morrill Award for outstanding career achievement in 2013.
As an author, Randy has written numerous books on subjects ranging from Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, John Wayne, Muhammad Ali, and Hollywood to works on the Vietnam War and the Alamo.
It is fitting that as Purdue marks this historic moment in the university’s history, one of our most revered professors of history is so honored.
