Erin Moodie

Please join me in congratulating Erin Moodie, assistant professor of classics, for winning the 2018 Ladislaus J. Bolchazy Pedagogy Book Award for her published guide to Plautus’ Roman comedy Poenulus (The Little Carthaginian).

The award, to be presented at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South in Albuquerque, N.M. in April, is accompanied by a $500 prize.

The Bolchazy Award honors distinguished works of pedagogy within the field of classical studies that are primarily intended for the classroom and published by CAMWS members within the last three years. Erin’s book, Plautus’ Poenulus: A Student Commentary (University of Michigan Press, 2015), offers a detailed introduction and explanatory notes to Plautus’ play, aiding students in their translation and interpretation of the text.

The award selection committee lauded Erin's work, with one committee member writing, "The rich introduction to Plautus' meters and manuscript tradition, the general background to Roman drama and the specific background of the Poenulus, one of the most complicated of all Plautus' plays, and the enviable command of scholarship on Plautus make this commentary an excellent choice as a scholarly ... but accessible treatment of the play."

Congratulations, Dr. Moodie!
