Gabriela Garcia
Please join me in congratulating Gabriela Garcia (M.F.A., 2018) for winning the 2018 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award.
The Lafayette resident will receive a $30,000 prize that will fund a research trip to Cuba and allow her to focus on writing projects over the next year. Gabriela is writing a novel, Of Women and Salt, focused on her heritage as the daughter of Mexican and Cuban immigrants.
Gabriela, who completed a B.A. at Fordham University, is also working on a collection of short stories, some of which are published of forthcoming in Iowa Review, TriQuarterly, Indiana Review, and Black Warrior Review.
Now in its 24th year, the Rona Jaffee Award assists women writers of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry who demonstrate excellence and promise in the early stages of their careers by offering encouragement and financial support. Since the program began, the Rona Jaffe Foundation has awarded more than $2.5 million to emergent women writers.
Gabriela is one of six writers who will receive the award on Sept. 13 in New York City.
Congratulations, Gabriela!
