Matt Lipps

California-based artist Matt Lipps received his MFA from University of California, Irvine in 2004. His works can be found in the collections of Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, CA); The Saatchi Gallery (London, UK); and The Pilara Foundation Collection/Pier 24 (San Francisco).

Matt Lipps critically examines photographs from both high art and pop culture to reveal how photographic images reflect and shape culture. In his series “Looking Through Pictures” Lipps constructs his own still life set ups from appropriated photographs and then lights and re-photographs them. Emphasizing the theatricality and performative nature of this process, Lipps has essentially created a stage for photography to perform. Images from printed photographs are physically cut and constructed, operating as both actors and set pieces. The constructed still life is photographed digitally, and the viewer is left to consider what exists between the materiality of form and the digital.
