Study Abroad Programs

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese offers four Study Abroad programs. The coursework from these programs aligns directly with the curriculum for the major and minors in Spanish and is pre-approved by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese. Credits in Spanish are guaranteed upon successful completion of the courses. In Spain, you can choose from three programs that we offer in Madrid and Mallorca. Or you can choose to study in Latin America, in Peru or Colombia. 

 

SUMMER STUDY ABROAD MADRID, SPAIN (click here to see the flyer)

The Summer Study Abroad program in Madrid is a six-week immersion program that takes place at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, in Madrid, Spain. Students may choose two courses (6 credit hours) from the following list: SPAN 302: Spanish Level VI; SPAN 498: Arte del Prado; SPAN 498: Spanish Culture and Civilization. Courses are taught in Spanish by faculty from Purdue University and the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija. Credits count towards the Spanish major and minors. The Universidad Antonio de Nebrija is a private university, accredited by the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, that specializes in Spanish as a Second Language. This program presents an ideal opportunity for students who want to improve their language skills, develop intercultural competence, and engage with native Spanish speakers. SUMMER STUDY ABROAD MALLORCA, SPAIN (click here to see the flyer)

The Summer Study Abroad program in Palma de Mallorca is a six-week immersion program that takes place at the Universidad de las  Islas Baleares (UIB). The university and the Center for the Study of the Spanish Language have a well-known international reputation in the teaching of Spanish as a Second Language and are accredited by the Cervantes Institute. Students will stay with Spanish families in Palma de Mallorca and will be immersed in Spanish culture and language via language and content courses, excursions, and other extracurricular activities. Participants will enroll in two courses (6 credits hours) from the following list: SPAN 301; SPAN 398 Spanish Politics and Society; or SPAN 398 Spanish Modernism.  All courses are taught in Spanish by professors from Purdue and the UIB and they count for the Spanish major and minors. For more information, visit the Study Abroad website. 

 

STUDY ABROAD IN MANIZALES, COLOMBIA (Flyer included here)

The summer Study Abroad program in Colombia is an enriching six-week immersion experience hosted at the University of Caldas in the picturesque city of Manizales. Manizales, a city celebrated for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant coffee culture, students will find themselves in a welcoming and stimulating environment. This program offers a unique blend of academic rigor and cultural immersion, designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Colombian life and society. During this program, students can earn up to 9 credits. Credits count towards the Spanish major and minors. Students will stay with Colombian families in Manizales and will have the opportunity to be immersed in Colombian culture.  Participants can enroll in two courses, each worth 3 credit hours. SPAN 301; SPAN 398 Contemporary Colombian Art; or SPAN 398 Colombian Culture and Civilization. These courses provide a deep dive into Colombia's rich artistic heritage, exploring the works of influential Colombian artists and understanding the cultural and historical contexts of their creations. In addition to the two primary courses, participants can optionally earn an additional three credits by engaging in a service learning program. This program component integrates community service with instruction and reflection, enriching the learning experience by fostering a deeper understanding of the host community.

 

STUDY ABROAD IN LIMA, PERU (click here to see the flyer)

The Summer Global Internship and Study Abroad in Lima-Peru study abroad offers two options: a five-week immersion program of language and culture studies; or an eleven-week immersion program with a global internship experience. With the five-week program, students will take two courses (6 credit hours): SPAN language class (100, 200, and more) and LALS 25000 (Latin American Culture). Students enrolled in the global internship experience and study abroad will take 3 courses (9 credit hours): SPAN language class, LALS 2500, and IDIS 49000. Credits count towards the Spanish major and minors as well as the Latin American and Latino Studies minor. This program is an ideal opportunity for students who want to learn professional or business practices related to their major and improve their language skills. WIP/T MADRID PROGRAM (Wisconsin, Indiana, Purdue, Tulane)

The WIP/T Madrid program is offered in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University, and Tulane University. Students can opt for doing one or two semesters of study. This program offers advanced Spanish students the opportunity to develop Spanish language skills through immersion while exploring all that Madrid has to offer. During the program, students have the option of taking service-learning courses.
