Student Community Information
The Center for C-SPAN Scholarship & Engagement (CCSE) is a unique resource at Purdue University within the Brian Lamb School of Communication and the College of Liberal Arts. It focuses on discovery, learning, and engagement using the C-SPAN Archives.
Discovery:
TO INCREASE ACCESS TO THE USE OF THE C-SPAN ARCHIVES AND RELATED PUBLIC RESOURCES FOR SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY.
Research is a key element of the center’s initiatives. Using some of the over 250,000 hours of C-SPAN political history over the past 30 years, faculty and students will be able to examine important elements of our political past. The scholarship will be dedicated to the spirit of the C-SPAN mission including access and transparency of governmental institutions.
- Fund research grants to faculty
- Sponsor workshops and panels at national meetings
- Hold national research conferences at Purdue
- Publish annual research volumes
- Highlight research using the Archives
Increasing the use of the Archives in classrooms is at the heart of the CCSE mission, whether it is by faculty to instruct or by students to learn the role government plays in their lives. The center will train and encourage the use of the C-SPAN Video Library through student assignments as ways to innovate the delivery of ideas using videos and especially C-SPAN unedited, primary source video. In addition, the center will provide experiential learning, offering opportunities to participate in the political process first hand.
-
Promote and assist in the use of archival video in the classroom
-
Provide opportunities for students to watch and participate in the political process
-
Sponsor an annual Maymester program in Washington, DC
-
Sponsor other experiential learning activities
Learning:
TO INCREASE ACCESS TO THE USE OF THE C-SPAN ARCHIVES AND RELATED PUBLIC RESOURCES FOR SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY.
Engagement:
BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN STUDENTS, SCHOLARS, AND THE WIDER PUBLIC BY FOCUSING ATTENTION ON PUBLIC AFFAIRS ISSUES
Using the elements derived in Discovery and Learning, the Center will then foster ways to engage students, faculty, and the public in forums. National leaders and journalists will be brought in to expose them to ideas in applied research and engagement in political communication.
- Bring nationally recognized leaders and journalists to Purdue to interact with students and faculty
