WGSS 28000 - Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies
An introductory survey of the concepts and research data in the new scholarship on women, gender, and sexuality. Topics covered include biology, sexuality, socialization, family and work, creativity, and politics. Recommended both as an overview for those generally interested in gender and women's issues, and as a foundational course for those committed to more advanced women's studies. Though the content will vary in specific sections, 28000 will always focus on the intersection of gender with factors such as race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and nationality in U.S. and global contexts.
WGSS 28100-001 Women Writers in Transition
This course examines in-depth particular topics from the introductory course in Women's Studies. It addresses gender issues for both men and women. Possible topcis include gender and popular culture, women's bodies, body image and health, masculinities, queering gender and gender transgression.
WGSS 28200- Introduction to LGBT Studies
This course will offer students an introduction to the Interdisciplinary study of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer lives, histories, identities and movements in the U.S. and globally. Through course reading, film screenings, fiction, autobiographical texts and class discussion, we will explore the cultural and historical contexts and meanings of sexual identities and transgender identities, the formation of sexual communities, and their intersections with race, ethnicity, class, gender and nation.
WGSS 38000 - Gender and Multiculturalism
Gender & Multiculturalism is an interdisciplinary course that focuses on cross-cultural and global experiences and perspectives in the study of gender and the status of women. The course considers how gender, "race," class, nationality, sexuality, disability, and other identity categories shape human experience, and the course examines how cultural beliefs concerning gender roles shape the experience of oppression and privilege. In addition, the course explores how individuals and communities resist oppression and realize social justice.
WGSS 38100 - Women of Color in the United States
Explores the diversity of racial and ethnic groups in the United States with a particular emphasis on the histories, experiences, and cultural contributions of women of color. Provides a broad introduction to the intersections of gender, race and ethnicity.
WGSS 38200 – Love, Sex, and Sexuality
Explores intimate relationships and marriage practices in Western and non-Western societies from a historical and comparative perspective. Examines the changes in love and marriage in Greco-Roman societies, medieval and modern Europe, China, India and the Muslim world, among others.
WGSS 38300 - Women and Work
This course examines research of women’s and gender issues in work organizations and the nature of women’s participation in trade unions. We begin with early factory work, when women began working in large numbers in textile mills in the north and as tobacco workers in the south, and end with an examination of working women today. Topics include WWII and its Aftermath; Sexual Harassment; Globalization; Race, Gender, Civil Rights, and Unions; Occupational Inequality, and Women in Management and Professions.
WGSS 39000 - Warfare & Diplomacy
Selected topics under the direction of an instructor in a particular field of specialization.
Hist 430: Women in African History
In this course, students examine the social, political, economic, religious, and cultural experiences of women living in Africa. Although we look at women in the pre-colonial and slave trade eras, the focus will be on women during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Much of our reading and discussion will consider not only women, but also gender as we think about women's interactions with men and children. This course is concerned with the historical forces shaping African women's lives, as well as with ways in which women have been active agents in the making of their own histories. Texts will include films, novels, scholarly analyses, and primary documents.
WGSS 48000 - Feminist Theory
This course is an introduction to key texts, concepts, and debates that have informed contemporary articulations of feminist theory. Throughout the course, the idea of “feminist theory” will be interrogated, especially the politics of what and who is attributed to this name in an effort to work through the political, cultural, economic, and academic effects of this term. Our readings, assignments and discussions provide opportunities to explore how gender, feminism and theory are produced through constellations of nation, race, gender, citizenship, sexuality, and class in different historical and cultural contexts. The course will foreground the relationship between theory, social justice, and activism and will seek to encourage and invest in these mutual projects.

WGSS 48300 - Global Feminisms
Explores feminist struggles through the writings of First and Third World feminist scholars. Focuses on feminist projects within and against colonial, nationalist, religious and global contexts. Includes Third World feminist critiques of Western feminisms.
WGSS 49200 – Practicum in WGSS
This course is meant to provide an opportunity for students, under the direction of a WGSS instructor, to engage in and earn credit for service learning, internships, and/or community engagement that contributes feminist praxis to campus or off-campus organizations or communities. Course structure and assignments will vary widely but typically, students can be expected to perform an average of 8 hours of work per week, to keep a journal of their activities, and to submit a final report, paper, or thesis analyzing their impact and elaborating upon how their experience enriched their feminist perspective and understanding of issues or concepts central to Women, Gender, and/or Sexuality Studies. This course requires permission from the instructor, can be taken for 1-3 credits, and can be repeated.

WGSS 68000 - Feminist Theory
This course is an introduction to key texts, concepts, and debates that have informed contemporary articulations of feminist theory. Throughout the course, the idea of “feminist theory” will be interrogated, especially the politics of what and who is attributed to this name in an effort to work through the political, cultural, economic, and academic effects of this term. Our readings, assignments and discussions provide opportunities to explore how gender, feminism and theory are produced through constellations of nation, race, gender, citizenship, sexuality, and class in different historical and cultural contexts. The course will foreground the relationship between theory, social justice, and activism and will seek to encourage and invest in these mutual projects.
WGSS 68100 - Contemporary Issues In Feminist Scholarship
Applies feminist theory, knowledge, and methods to the examination of selected contemporary issues. Emphasizes ways in which theory and practice interact in feminist scholarship. Content will vary each time it is offered. See upcoming course schedule for specifics.
WGSS 68200 - Issues In Feminist Research and Methodology
This course provides a methodological framework for theorizing, constructing and executing research from a feminist perspective. Students acquire knowledge of the diversity of feminist research projects and methods; they learn to pose research questions; and they will be able to prepare a research or grant proposal drawing on interdisciplinary methods. The course is designed to meet the needs of graduate students in Women’s Studies and is open to students in other programs who are interested in feminist research. The course deals with both theoretical and practical issues in methodology.
