ANDIE SLOMKA: WASHINGTON BOUND

For Political Science and Genetics double-major, Andie Slomka, Purdue “has brought me so many opportunities and experiences that I never thought I would have. Not only have I traveled so many places, but I have met tons of interesting people along the way.”

The Fishers, Indiana native has interned at the Center for C-SPAN Scholarship & Engagement, studied in Washington, DC, and spent time on the campaign trail during the Iowa Caucuses where she met President-elect Joe Biden, and attended caucuses large and small. Slomka was even featured on a local news channel after helping implement an exit poll on campus as part of her work in Professor James McCann’s Campaigns and Elections class.

During her Maymester in Washington, DC, Slomka “met with special guests, both at C-SPAN and at other places around D.C., including historians, current and former politicians, journalists, political consultants, and even the Vice President.” Students also “toured places like the White House Press Briefing Room, the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, The Capitol Building (including the House and Senate galleries), and NPR.”

While her ultimate goal is to be a teacher following her graduation from Purdue, Slomka hopes to live and work in Washington, DC. Her goal is to be involved in political consulting or the media.

The words Slomka uses to best characterize her time at Purdue are “exciting and rigorous.”

From taking a class with C-SPAN founder, Brian Lamb, to planning a future leadership role on campus in a student organization that focuses on “politics, communication, and history,” the College of Liberal Arts and College of Science student has thrown herself into life on and off campus.

Hard work has helped Slomka on her Purdue journey. As she notes “one cannot have these experiences at Purdue without working harder than they have ever worked.” The results, however, are “completely worth it in the end.”
