Global Matrix II
January 8 through February 18, 2007
Robert L. Ringel Gallery, PMU and Stewart Center Gallery
From its humble origins as simple relief rubbings or patterns stamped onto paper and cloth, the art of the print has spread to all corners of the globe, growing and developing conceptually as a result of the contributions of an ever-growing circle of international artists. By drawing and manipulating an image matrix, they have utilized the essence of the multiple to explore the varied possibilities of image, color and repetition. The proliferation of multiple images around the world has led to a shared culture of appreciation. Styles and techniques identified with particular printmaking enclaves in various parts of the world can readily be seen now in the works of artists with different languages and different cultures, separated by thousands of miles.
This exhibit presents a contemporary review of fine art printmaking in all media from around the world presented as a traveling exhibition by the Purdue University Galleries. The first installment of the exhibit was presented in 2002. That exhibit featured a total of 78 works representing 67 individual artists from 19 countries around the world. It was presented at Purdue University and six other venues over the next two years.
The curatorial team from the 2002 exhibit will return for this review, including Kimberly Vito, assistant professor of Art and Art History at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio; Kathryn Reeves, professor of Art and Design at Purdue University; and Craig Martin, director of Purdue University Galleries. Joining them this year will be Sean Caulfield, Associate Professor of Art & Design at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
