Submission Guidelines
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures welcomes completed manuscripts on topics of literary, theoretical, or philological importance that make a significant contribution to scholarship in French, Italian, Luso-Brazilian, Spanish, and Spanish American literatures. A PDF of these Guidelines is available here.
Preliminary inquiry
Authors interested in publishing with PSRL should first send a proposal describing their work. Proposals, either paper or PDF, should include a short description of the study, a table of contents, and a brief CV. More specific suggestions for proposals are outlined in the document attached here. The editors will examine the materials and, if interested, request the manuscript.
Preparation of the manuscript
Manuscripts should be approximately 80,000–110,000 words (250–300 pages) in length. The entire manuscript (text, quotes, notes, and bibliography) must be double spaced. The text may be in English, French, or Spanish. If you include images, there should be no more than six. Quotations should be in the original language. Quotations in French and Spanish do not need to be translated. A quotation in another language should be followed by an English translation. Please inquire for details. Dissertations should be rigorously revised before submission to meet the definition of a book. The manuscript must conform to the latest edition of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (New York: MLA), following the parenthetical style of documentation. Each copy should be an anonymous manuscript, including two title pages, one with the author’s name, the other without. The author’s name must not appear in the page headings or anywhere in the manuscript. References to the author in text and notes must be in the third person. However, the manuscript will be sent out as it is received. For more details, see Manuscript Files.
Materials required for submission
Authors are required to submit (1) two clean paper copies of the manuscript, completely double spaced, unbound, and printed on one side only, (2) a PDF of the entire manuscript, and (3) a signed statement that Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures is and will remain the sole reviewing agency while it is considering the work for publication. Copies will not be returned.
Additional requirements
If a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author will be asked for a subvention to defray some of the production expenses. At that time we also require an electronic copy of the final manuscript. Send your files in Microsoft Word for the Mac or the PC. Word Perfect files should be saved in Microsoft Word format.
