How has your internship helped build skills and clarify your career goals?

This internship helped build skills that I could not have gained otherwise. For example, my people skills have adapted greatly and in turn have suited me to be ready for any challenge that may come. Additionally, I formed a new skill/habit of staying informed with the issues of today. Whether it is listening to morning news podcasts or reading the headlining articles of today from an array of publications, having knowledge of what is happening in the world is incredibly important to me and impacts everyone, so it is great to be in the know. After completing the internship, I have more clarity on the type of career that I am wanting to pursue post-graduation.

How do you apply your Liberal Arts skills in your internship?

I feel as if the skills that my Liberal Arts classes taught me were some of the most integral skills that assisted me through my internship. Soft skills were some of the most important skills I had to apply in my day-to-day duties, particularly with communication, interpersonal skills, and flexibility to the every changing demands and topics that the Senate faces.

Describe your typical day as an intern.

A typical day consisted of answering phone calls from Indiana constituents, giving tours of the Capital, attending briefings or hearings, assisting in correspondence, drafting memos and running errands for the staff. The day to day responsibilities came with a lot of exciting aspects.

What was the most exciting thing about your role?

One of the most exciting aspects of my internship was the location. I was able to work in such an interesting and historical place at such an interesting time in history with some of the most driven and passionate people in our country - which was super surreal to think about.
